Kalju Nagel (1928-2005)
The famous 20th century Estonian painter Kalju Nagels was born in the village of Ibaste, Tartu County. His childhood was spent in Ahja, Metskila. In 1936-1939, the future master of Estonian landscape painting studied at the most prestigious Estonian interwar Academy of Art in Pallas, in the A.Vardi studio in Tartu. Consigned for military service in 1939. Participated in World War II. After the war he continued his studies (1945-1947) under the supervision of Professor A. Vardi at the Tartu State Art Institute. 1957-1963 became a time of active public activity, during which, among other things, K. Nagels was repeatedly elected chairman of the Tartu branch of the Estonian Artists' Union. He was also one of the most active initiators and construction managers of the Tartu Art House. He has been organizing art exhibitions in Southern Estonia since 1966 as a consultant. Member of the Estonian Artists' Union since 1956. Participated in exhibitions since 1947. He has created landscape paintings, less still lifes, portraits and figural compositions.
The work offered at the auction is considered to be a classic example of the landscape of Kalju Nagel. The artist has been inspired from an early age by the surroundings of Southern Estonia, especially the ancient Estonian holy lake Pühajärv, which is characterized by active terrain with wooded hills and lakes, not to mention Lake Puhajarv itself, which poessesing an archipelago of five islands is the largest lake in the South Estonia. It is in the vicinity of this lake that the events described in the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg take place.
The composition of the painting is characterized by an extended depth of perspective, which, together with lake islands and winding shoreline, the dynamics of the movement of cumulus clouds, and the subdued hills illuminated by the northern sun, creates romanticism and appeal that are difficult to express. A depiction of a masterful artist's deep soul experience, romantic love for his homeland can be felt.
Painting is framed in the original restored frame.
