Dzemma Skulme (1925-2019)
Skulme graduated from the Academy of Arts of Latvia, Department of Monumental Painting with diploma work “Song Festival” under the guidance O. Skulme. She graduated from the Leningrad Painting, Sculpture and Architecture institute of I. Repins, she obtained the degree of an Art Scientist Candidate for the painting “Our celebration” (1956.) Between 1945 and 1947 she worked as a decorator’s assistant at Daile Theater and the Dolls’ Theater. Since 1949, she takes part at exhibitions.
Solo exhibitions: Riga (1968, 1985, 1992, 1994, 1995), Moscow (1969, 1984), Geneva (Switzerland), Milan (Italy, 1971), Vilnius (1976), Kale ( France with O. Abols), Fredrikstadt (Norway, 1994, 1995), Cesis (1996), Kiev (Ukraine 1997), Family of Skulmes exhibition in West Berlin (1981), Pitsburg (USA, 1986), Bergamo (Italy, 1987), Riga (1998 – 1999).
Group exhibitions: New York (1989), Munich (with M. Skulme and V. Pelse), Bonn, Pitsburg (USA, Women Between Times: New Nations; New Art, 1993).
Skulme is a Member of the Latvian Artists’ Union since 1956, the Chairman of the Artists’ Union (1982 – 1992).
Since 1993, the artist is the director of Creative Foundation.
She has been a very important person in the Soviet Latvian cultural life.
